As some of you may have noticed my site is having some problems with the speed it loads up at. The hosting providers are apparently working on it so hopefully it’ll all be fixed soon enough. Thanks for sticking with it.
Just one of those days
After the excitement of Monday, yesterday was a bit of a let-down. I finished at -$575, mainly due to a couple of mistakes (several times assuming wrongly that players that I’d been hammering on were adjusting to my play, but no, they had the nuts) and and being $500 under ev. It was a pretty uneventful day really with not much to report. In 5500 hands I only played two $400+ pots, and most of the other large pots I played were all pretty standard.
I’m going to try to get a good long session in this morning, then this afternoon I have a session with my “student”. I’ve always been interested in getting into coaching but never felt confident enough to give it a go. I’d been feeling more confident in my play recently though so a few weeks ago I made a post on two-plus-two offering a bunch of free coaching sessions to one lucky micro-stakes player. I’ve been working with the guy I picked for a few weeks now. Hopefully I’m helping him out with his game, and I’m learning more about the coaching process as we go along. It’s a lot harder than it seems. It’s one thing to know something, but a lot harder to put it into words that someone else can understand and learn from. If it all works out well and I get good feedback from my current student I’m probably going to think about getting more involved in the coaching side of the game. To get a bit more experience I’ll probably be offering more free coaching spots though so if you’re interested make sure you keep an eye out on my blog.
I’m hoping the players amongst you can give me some insight on this hand from yesterday…..
Poker Stars $1/$2 No Limit Hold’em – 9 players
Hero (CO): $272.20
Pre Flop: ($3.00) Hero is CO with T of clubs Q of clubs
UTG raises to $6, 4 folds, Hero raises to $20, 3 folds, UTG calls $14
UTG was a big fish (48/29, 50% open from EP, had called 7/7 3bets so far) so I 3bet him for value. While I’m not exactly crushing his range with QTs, it’s doing well enough against it, and I have position and a huge skill advantage (or so the theory goes….)
Flop: ($43.00) Q of hearts 4 of hearts 5 of spades (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $32, UTG calls $32
Top pair on a drawy flop is a clear value-bet. Normally this wouldn’t be considered too drawy a flop in a 3bet pot but this guy is going to have tons of smaller suited-connectors and other suited hands, plus he’s never folding any pair and probably even A-high.
Turn: ($107.00) K of diamonds (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets $58, UTG calls $58
The K isn’t a great card for me. It hits some of his range and acts as an action killer for his weaker made hands, but I still have to value-bet it as he’s never folding any draw (including draws he’s backed into with hands like AJ/AT/TJ).
River: ($223.00) 5 of clubs (2 players)
UTG bets $191.28 all in, Hero has $162 behind to call………
